Rannoch Fire

Ceramic bowl with ash from fire,
Ash glased lantern,
Fabric banner, held by partially burned stick.

Exploring the possibilities of ash glazes, this artistic exploration seeks to immortalise the essence of a specific time and place, imbuing each creation with a tangible connection to the past. Using foraged materials to craft the glaze, the artist aims to evoke a sense of ritual, weaving together various works that coalesce into a singular, poignant reflection of a moment or location.

By mixing only clay and ash, a glossy glaze forms around the lantern, capturing the very essence of a night spent on Loch Rannoch. The second ceremony, held on the day of Baltane Fire festival on April 30th, which marks the arrival of summer and the fertility of the land. Through this exhibition, the artist seeks not only to commemorate this special day, but also to draw attention to the timeless similarities between past and present celebrations, as communities gather around fires during the warm summer months.
